A Fictional Story By Me
My First Ever One
Chapter I - Childhood through Adulthood
Nguyễn Thanh Bình was born during the French colonial rule of Vietnam. He had to suffer a lot with his father's death when he was 9. Eventually the French rule over Indochina ended in 1954 and he and his other were relieved. During his Elementary School Years, he was popular in his class. His ability to think extremely quickly made the classmates impressed. After living in Cần Thơ for a while, he and his family moved to Sài Gòn where he met new friends during Middle School. He would often get bullied by other students, however he managed to defend himself. His friends were cool with him. A special friend he had was Albert, a student who moved from The USA to South Vietnam because a relative of his lived there. They got along extremely well. On one occasion, Albert wanted Bình to hang out with a new friend he made, Benjamin. He was bullied a lot because of his appearance and his only friend was Albert, so when they met they were extremely enlightened. They also got along quite well. Afterwards, all of them decided to form a friend group. Slowly but surely, more students came and joined them. Eventually, their group was quite the popular one. They would usually play war games during PE lessons with Albert and Bình being the "generals". Everything was going well until Albert had to go back to the USA because a relative of his passed away, so he left Bình in charge of the "general" in the war games. Even without Albert, the friend group still enjoyed everything they had. On the day Albert came back, the group welcomed him back with big arms. Albert decided to play a war game with Bình in charge and they did well, even better than the last times, so he left his crown to Bình, although Albert would still remain in the group. Eventually they graduated Year 2. Surprisingly, they still met each other during PE lessons and continued the war game tradition they had. They were also popular with the students in High school, and so more of the people in the school joined them. At this point it was safe to say that this was no longer a group. It was a school clan. Despite the harsh studying, they still found joy in the clan.
Chapter II - The Vietnam War
Shortly after they graduated Year 4, the Vietnam War was raging and they were all drafted to the military. They still met each other at the battlefield. Albert, Bình, and Benjamin were excited to see each other again and Bình once said jokingly: "Those years of playing War Games will pay off!". The battle was harsh and there were many casualties. Luckily, they remained friendly to each other and would fight together. They had extraordinary luck. surviving multiple grenades and shells. They were in a tank once and they led the way steadily. The general noticed this and promoted them high up in the ranks. Bình's luck ran out when he hit a grenade, although Albert and Benjamin were there and medically helped him. After he fully healed at the hospital, he went back and Albert and Benjamin were still there, fighting. On one occasion, Albert saw a Communist tank behind Benjamin and shouted "BENJAMIN! LOOK BACK THERE! THE TANK IS BACK THERE BENJAMIN!". It was too late. Benjamin attempted to avoid it but he ended up moderately wounded. Luckily, he healed at the hospital and was ready to head back to the battlefield. After running a couple meters, Bình noticed Benjamin running in the fog and ran straight to him. Meanwhile in the trenches, Albert was singing "Goodnight, My Beautiful" and "Heartaches" to himself to ease the stress. Bình always found a lyric in Heartaches that always gave him a weird feeling. "I can't believe it's just a burning memory", Albert sang. Bình noticed the North Vietnamese and began running for their life. they managed to escape and freed by an American soldier named Layton. Bình described him as a brave man, with an ambition more than Napoleon Bonaparte. Eventually the war ended and all 4 and their families fled to the USA, where they lived in the same neighborhoods. Every night they would usually meet and talk about their thoughts and other things in life. Layton once said something that captivated the rest of them. He told them about his grandmother, who had to suffer, and is suffering, through Alzheimer's. One day when he visited her, she barely recognized him. He said it was saddening to see her in a state of confusion. The rest began telling stories they had about dementia. Bình's mother had moderate Alzheimer's. Benjamin's grandfather had Parkinson's Disease. Albert's father had down syndrome. All 4 had relatives who have dementia in one form or another.
Chapter III - Middle Aged Friendship
The Vietnam War had aged them quite a lot. One day, Bình visited his mother. She could still recognize him as her son, although she had forgotten his name. Bình came to her and said "I will always love you, even if you're suffering through this". By this time she was in her late seventies and early eighties. Bình then went back to his neighborhood where he continued to meet up with his friends. They had no source of income at all, so they decided to get jobs. Eventually all 4 applied for successful jobs and they rose high up to the ranks. They still met up at night. Then they had to retire. They still played War Games to remember the times at High School. Layton found out and also joined in. He told them "You're never too old to play a memory, especially when all you are going to want to do is get back there". Word spread around the neighborhood about them and they were popular. The neighbors found joy in the war games and invited more of them to come. The PE teacher in their neighborhood opened up the court to play with the others. They continued this tradition until all of the neighbor's children were drafted into the war with Afghanistan. They waited and then the day came where all of them came back to their families. One student named Russell proclaimed "Those war games definitely paid off!". They also allowed female students to come play so there were a lot more people playing the games. That was, until Bình started showing signs of Alzheimer's disease... . And that was when the end of time began.
